BE189OLD TACKED BOXThis is a very attractive old box that is covered with a leather type material and lined with old tacks. The tacks are tarnished and have been there a long time. Tacks outline the initial H W on the top of the box. Theres an old metal plate attached to the lid that reads INDIAN/ U.S./STANDING ROCK/ INDIAN AGENCY/ H.WILSON/ AGENT/1889. The plate looks old. There looks to have been another plate on the lid first and had been removed and this plate affixed, but a long time ago. The brass lock in the front is most unusual. It is marked PATENT with no other marking. It was a keyed box but there is no key available. I have attempted to see if there was an H Wilson who was an Indian Agent at Standing Rock in 1889 but have been unable to find any name of an indian agent as of this time. If anyone knows where I can find such a list, let me know. It looks good to me, but have never seen anything like it before so that makes me want to check it out a lot more. PRICE: $900Picture

BE188OLD SADDLE BLANKET WITH BUGLE BEADSThis is a beautiful old saddle blanket with a lot of old bead work. The beads are old glass bugle beads. The back of the blanket appears to be part of an old cavalry tent. The front is old wool like from a military blanket or coat. On some of the photos the wool looks reddish. It must be the lighting as the wool is blue. The blanket is bordered with trade cloth. The saddle blanket measures about 35 inches by 45 inches. This would be a beautiful blanket to go under one of those beattiful Sioux Squaw saddles. It came to me from a Montana Collector with a Navajo Saddle. Those Navajo saddles are great but just not fancy enough to go with this blanket. I have several great plains indian and Navajo style saddle but just do not have an beautiful old squaw saddle to put it with. Great old Saddle Blanket from Sioux/Cheyenne Country. PRICE: $2500Picture

BE185HOPI WINNOWING TRAYThis is a very attractive old Hopi Winnowing Tray from about 1900. It measures about 12-1/2 inches in diameter and is about 3/4th to 1 inche deep. It has two handles that can be used to hang the item. Winnowing trays have been used for 100’s of years to seperate the wheat, barley and other seeds from the chaff. This items came from the grandson of the lady who found this item discarded in the trash around 1910, and is has been in the same family every since. It has been hanging on the wall of the home of the grandson for many years. It is intereting to hear the story about how such an item in excellent condition was discarded. It could be because packaged seeds were available at that time and the use for such an item by the Native American was diminished. Of course there are other explanations. However, the important thing is that this beautiful items has survived in such excellent condition for over a century. PRICE: $1275Picture

BE171>APACHE BURDEN BASKETThis is a most interesting basket. I acquired this basket it a little antique store, near the Smoky Bear National Museum in Capitan, New Mexico. The lady in the antique store insisted it was called a burden basket. She said she has seen a few over the years but never one this large. The wood appears to be willow and the lining is probably deer skin. The hair is still on some of the skin. The top is 21 inches in diameter and it is 21 inches tall. She indicated these type baskets were made by the Mescalero Apache and the Jicarilla Apache. Capitan is located about 20 miles North of the Inn of the Mountain Gods on the Apache Reservation and about 20 miles West of Lincoln, New Mexico. It is about 10 miles West of the site where the first Smoky Bear was found as a cub after a forest fire, had his life saved and spent the remaining years in the Washington Zoo as the first Smoky Bear. That bear lived about 25 more years and is buried in Capitan. The store where this item was purchased is about a block away from the Museum. This was on Labor Day week-end and she had a large sign indicating a large percentage off her items. However, she would not give that discount on this item. If fact she was rather difficult to deal with on this item. She also insisted that she would not take my Tax Number so sales tax had to be charged. She did not want my American Express Card either-cash only. I concluded from this she did not really want to sell this item or knew I really wanted it and she had me. It was at her closing time so I could not walk out and see if she would at least give me the Sales Tax break. I finally caved and met her terms. I did manage to get her to throw in an old copy of the National Georgaphic she was asking a dollar for. Had to do something to save my ego, even if just a very little. My wife and two friends who were with me gave me the rasberries about being out psyched. No question about it. I wanted it and she knew it. They all did agree they liked it a lot and it was most unusual. Obviously I think It is very unique piece. If anyone has any information on an item like this, please feel free to let me know. LE084APACHE SADDLE.This is a most unusual saddle. I picked it up at the Beinfeld Antique Arms Show in January. It looks somewhat like a pack saddle but is covered with what appears to be steer hide. It has a frame made of small branches of a tree bound together for strength and the staves of what appears to be a Yucca cacti fastened to those small branches. A most unusual piece. It it is good shape and does show signs of wear. However, it may have been covered by a blanket something like that when used as I showed in image F below. I have lived in Southern Arizona for years and the tree parts, yucca plant parts and steer hide all look like what one would expect to see in this area and apacheria. If anyone has better information on this item please fell free to email me. The saddle blanket did not come with the saddle and is not sold with the saddle. If someone really wants it and buys the saddle I would throw the blanket in for another $100, otherwise it is not for sale. PRICE:$950.Picture

BE072-HAUSMAN DRUG STORE SIGNThis is a very interesting old sign from Trinidad, Colorado. In the history of Trinidad it states that there was a mixture of Native American, European and Mexican in that area starting about the time of the Santa Fe Trail. This sign seems to encompass all. The name is in English, the drugs advertised are in Spanish, and there is a big emblem of the Whirling Log design which was used frequently in Navajo weaving until the Nazi Party adopted a similar design. Navajo Rugs with that Whirling Log design are very popular today because it is widely known that the Native Americans used that emblem years before it became common with the Nazi Party. The sign measures 8-7/8 x 19-3/4 and is in good condition. PRICE: $385 Picture

BE016-BEADED DANCING PIECE. I am really not for sure what this is. It appears to be something made in recent years. It has seashells fastened to the end of each string. It would tie around someone and could be used in dancing. With all those beads, it is somewhat heavy. The beadwork is red, white, light blue, dark blue, and yellow. This piece is African. A person emailed me the other day and indicated that the Zulu young women would wear these dancing skirts during their wedding or when trying to attract a young man. I responsed by saying that wearing this dancing skirt would surely attract a young man. PRICE: $50Picture
