In March of 2007 a friend of mine attended the 101 Ranch Collectors Gathering in Ponca City, Oklahoma. While there he meet some long time acquintance of Mike Sokoll, the last surviving cowboy of the Original 101 Ranch Wild West Show. The lady he met and her late husband used to run a restaurant-retail type store in Ponca City and Mike used to come in there all the time. She said that Mike always carried a small trick rope. Trick Roping was his claim to fame. She informed my friend that she had memorabilia from the Wild West Show that she would sell. During the following week my friend had conversation with her regarding 101 items she had for sale. Near the end of the week my friend acquired several items. The following six images are shown as documentation for the three hats, boots and spurs, and rope that he purchased that are being offered for sale. Those documents are not for sale but I will make a xeroxed copy of the two photographs, the two newspaper articles. and the cover and title page of the book written by Mike Sokoll and include them as part of the purchase price of the three hats, rope, and boots and spurs. Below are images of the originals of each of the items showing provenance. .

TMR101-PHOTO OF MIKE SOKOLL AND SALLY RANDPicture

According to the writing on the bottom of the picture this was taken at the Midland Theatre in Kansas City, Mo, on April 20, 1978. The picture they were holding is of Sally Rand and another gentleman at an earlier date. Do not know that date. I have been told that I might soon have a copy of the small photo that they are holding inside the picture with the name of that gentleman. (I now have the photo - see next listing below)

TMR101F-ORIGINAL PHOTO OF PICTURE THEY WERE HOLDING ABOVEPicture

UPDATE - I did receive the original photo of what Mike and Sally were holding in their picture above. The photo is of Sally Rand and Big Chief Doubleday. There are two dates on the photo-1913 and 1933. Do not know what those dates mean. If one looks to the right of Chief Doubleday you will see the trunk area of an automobile. That truck area gives me the impression it was from a 30’s model car. Therefore, I believe the original photo was taken in the 30’s. . In either event these are two photos of Sally Rand taken many years apart.

TMR101A-PICTURE OF MIKE SOKOLL AND MONTY MONTANA AND WIFEPicture

The writing on the back of the photo states that this was taken at the Rodeo Hale of Fame on Novermber 30, 1978. I have attended many rodeos in my younger years and have seen Monty Montana perfrom his trick riding on several occassions.

TMR101E-FRONT PAGE OF PONCA CITY NEWSPicture The paper is dated May 29, 1969, and talks of the gathering of the Old Timers of the 101 Ranch Wild West Show. The article stated that many who rode the 101 became famous including Will Rogers, Tom Mix, Ken Maynard, Jack Webb and Tex Cooper. I was surprised to read those names being former 101 Ranch cowboys. The picture on this page shows Mike Sokoll showing a young man the techniques of rope spinning. The article also states that Mike started with the 101 ranch in 1910.

TM202.MIKE SOKOLL’S WESTERN HATThis is one of the three hats acquired from the lady who, along with her late husband, had owned a store in Ponca City and knew both Mike Sokoll and his widow.. She indicated that came into their place of business frequently. This hat was one of Mike’s hats that he wore frequently. . The inside lining is marked Bradford Western with a stagecoach under the word Western. The sweat band is marked Cowboy Suppply House/ Ponca City, Okla. In the various photographs it is noted that he wore many different hats. This hat has the bend/fold that he apparently liked as many were styled this way. A business card of Mike Sokoll was found inside the sweatband It states he was President of the 101 Oldtimers. He also had written in ink on the card the following message “LIKE HELL ITS YOURS/PUT IT BACK” That original card will come with the hat. TM203.OLD ROPEThere are two pieces of old rope in this role. One piece is about 15 feet long and the other is about 8 feet long. They look the same age and may have been part of the same rope at one time. The rope Mike is shown using in the Ponca City News photo do not appear to be very long, but do not know how long a rope used for this type of activity should be. They do not appear to be have been used for roping animals. They are interesting, old and shows signs of use. We were told that the rope belonged to a cowboy by the name of Frenchy. On the rooster of the all time 101 Ranch employees there was a Frenchy listed. His name was Larry Williams. That was the only Frenchy I could find on that list . However, it is a hugh list and I could of overlooked a second one. While looking I noticed Tom Mix’s name on the list and again was surprised when I saw he worked several years for the 101. PRICE: $200Picture

TM204.BOOTS WITH 101 MARKED SPURSThis is an interesting combination of fancy boots and spurs. Each Spur has 101 stamped on one side and the initials MS stamped on the other. The boots are very fancy with several designs. There is a butterfly design on both the front and the back of the boot. The boots came with the spurs attached and I have not taken them apart. The boots shown signs of a lot of wear but are in very good condition and are well made. I could not find a maker mark on the inside of the boots. This comes with a signed statement from Ms. Sokoll that there were Mikes. PRICE$1500Picture
