TM226-ELGIN LEVER SET WATCH W/PEARL SLAB WATCH CHAINThis is an attractive old lever set pocket watch. The number on the mechanism is 4303423. According to a search of that serial number on Google that watch was made in 1890. There is some engraving on the frame of the mechanism and an inscribed name. The name is G.M. Wheeler, Elgin, Ill and Safety Pinion also appear on the frame of the mechanism. The case for the watch mechanism is marked 5 inside a double triangle over the number 137334. That case is inside a heavier case marked Chicago Coin over the number 5 inside the double triangle also over the number 137334. That same marking is on the inside of the front of the case that covers the crystal. The outside of that case appears to have been enscribed with a name but has so much wear that name cannot be for sure. The chain is sntique pearl with 6 chain lengths and overall measurement of 13-1/2 inches. This watch was not working so I spent $183.00 to have it and repaired with correct parts. It works great. The lever set can be used by simply opening the case to look at the time. One just needs to push down on the winding mechanism and the case opens. This is a heavy watch. It weighs 7.70 ozs without the chain. When I first saw the watch I thought the chain was made of those old California Quartz slabs, but upon close inspection realized it was old Pearl. The name on the dial is Elgin Natl. Watch Co. The company started in 1850 but that name was approved for use in 1874. PRICE: $675Picture

TM217-WESTERN HAT SIGNED BY JERRY REEDThis is a large, probably 7-7/8, size western style hat. The inside lining is marked The American Hat Company, Manufacturers, Houston, Texas. The sweat band is marked CRAZY HOUSE/ BOOT KING OF KANSAS/ GARDEN CITY, KANSAS. The size label is not there. I wear a large hat and many hats I see at shows are too small. I saw this one, it looked like a large size and tried it on. If fit so it must be a 7-7/8 or size 8. I liked it, made a deal on it, then the seller, who handles a lot of western items from famous people, said that I got a good deal and he would not of let it go for the value he did but he wanted something I had and wanted to make a trade. I picked out the hat as part of the trade items because it fit my head. I had not looked at it very closely. Then I asked why I had gotten a good deal. He said the hat was signed by Jerry Reed, the country singer who was the truck driver in Smoky and the Bandit. I had not noticed the signature on the underside of the brim until he pointed it out. No wonder he was holding firm on the total value of the trade deal. I assume he is correct on the signiture. I know him to be an honest dealer and handles these type items. PRICE: $300Picture

TM216-CROCKETT MARKED CHIHUAHUA STYLE SPURSOscar Crockett was born in Pecos, Texas, in 1887. He worked for C.P. Shipley until 1920. In died in 1949 and his wife sold the buisness to James Renalde in 1951. The Crockett mark appears on the rim. These were probably made in the 1920's. I was told by the experts that both Crockett and Kelly brothers made some Chihuahua style spurs. The band is 1-3/16,and the rowel is 3 inches. SOLDPicture

FL022-POWDER FLASKThis is a most unusual type powder flask. I was told it was from the early to mid 1800's and used in Mexico. I have never seen one like it so have to way to agree or disagree. I know it is a neat item If it was used in Mexico it would of probably been made in Spain or France. Many of the firearm items from that time period was shipped into Mexico from Europe. It is of quality construction. It is 6-1/2 inches from top to bottom. The diameter of the body is 4-1/2 inches. The top slides off and is not of the screw type. It is very tight. It appears to have been brass plate over the metal but the brass is mostly worn off. A most unusual and neat item. PRICE: $195Picture

TM198.CAVALRY TROOPERS SHAVING ITEMSThis is an interesting assortment of what appears to be a troopers shaving gear. It consists of a box, a straight razor w/cardboard type box, a beveled mirror, the soap brush and the strop. It came from a long time dealer friend who said he had it stuck back for a while and was told when it was acquired that it had been used by a cavalry trooper years ago. He had thought it was from the Indian Wars Period. In general most writers/historians like Utley and others look at the battle of Wounded Knee in late 1890 being the end of the so caller Indian Wars. There were a few recorded battles after 1890, the last one actually in 1917, but basically the Wars were over. As I have said many times, one of the interesting things about collecting is doing the research. Some of the items of this collection can be dated by the maker marks. The Strop, for example, is marked W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Co. That company, according to research on the net, came into existenance in 1888-89. The shaving soap brush in obviously old but not marked. The mirror has beveled edges. It is my understanding that beveled edge mirrors came into being in 1890’s. The wooden box looks old and had a flat mirror. It could be older than 1890. The maker of the razor is Wade and Butcher. Both the razor and box container it comes in have the same marking and both are marked Sheffield only. That mark indicated a probably manufacture date of prior to the early 1890’s About 1890, inmported productes like knives, etc. carried the country of Origin. If it would of been later that the early 1890’s it would of had England after the Sheffield. A cutlery maker by the name of Wade does appear in some knife maker books with different partners in the mid 1800’s. So this razor was probably made in the last quarted of the 1800’s and prior to 1890. The Strop is also marked sharpen 700 and U.S./CAVALRY/STROP. These is an interesting collection that appears to have been used over 115 or so years age and probably by a cavalry trooper on the western frontier. That trooper may have been assisnged to a Western Fort and involved in some post war battles but it should not be concluded that these items were in use by trooper during the prime Indian Wars Period. The trooper, whomever he was, may have been involved during that prime time period, but at least some of these items (strop, razor and one mirror) were not. Still a very interesting assortment. TM188.MOUSTACHE WAX HEATERThis is a heater of some type. I had never seen anything like it before. I was told it was used to heat the moustache wax so the person could run his fingers down the heated wax and twist it on his moustache. I could not disagree with that description. If you can, feel free to let me know. It is 6 inches in length when opened. 2-1/8 inches wide. The tank is designed for a wick so it has to be a heater for some function. I picked it up in an antique store North of Branson, Missouri. PRICE: $125Picture

TM168PIPE ON STANDThis is a most unusual pipe. It measures 14-1/2 inches in length with 10-3/8 inches of that length being silver wrapped over the wooden stem. Scrollwork covers the silver on the stem. We took this item on trade from a dealer/collector who said it was probably Native American from the Northeast. We liked the item and did not debate its origin. However, we felt it seemed to us to be Middle Eastern/North African rather than Native American so we did not list it in our Native American section. However, I have never seen such an item from either source. The pipe is in very good shape except for a crack in the bowl of the pipe. Since I acquired the item, I broke the stand. Will reduce the price from $185 to $100. PRICE: /Now $100Picture
